When I look through these photo of Lisa, I have to admit, I am envious. Not for reasons you might think, but because she expresses herself passionately--like I wish I would have at her age. Growing up in a small town, I didn't have many opportunities to express my passion for art and fashion. I was hot pink in a world of grey. I remember friends teasing me for my clothing choices and losing popularity at school because I would rather drive around taking photos than party with the in-crowd. Ultimately I learned how to push the unique spirit God gave me way down deep, so I could match the grey. The problem was, my hot pink always leaked out. (I guess it's kind of leaking out right now as a write this!) The challenge now is for me to learn to be hot pink again and appreciate my own uniqueness!

I don't know what color Lisa has inside her, but it isn't grey. And I love that.

I was so excited to do Caleb and Katie's engagement photos! Not only did we have a beautiful location and beautiful weather, but these two lovebirds were totally comfortable being themselves. As I was editing these, I was just struck by how absolutely in love they are and how much genuine fun they have together. Congratulations Caleb and Katie!

This was hands-down one of my favorite shoots from 2011. Nicole and her mom were SO much fun to hang out with. As you can see, the camera loved Nicole and it was almost impossible to take a bad photo of her. As I finish up my busy season, I so appreciate this family's patience, and I can't wait to share these gorgeous shots with them!

Family Mini Session

Here are some photos from a family Mini-Session I shot this past fall. I had a great time with this family on a beautiful autumn day. And it was so neat to see the way they interacted together. It was very similar to my own family, with two sons and a daughter about the same ages. Lots of energy and tons of fun...I felt right at home!

Cy (and an ode to Eau Claire)

Cy is an avid chess player and a senior at Marshfield High here in Wisconsin. It was a lot of fun to show these "out-of-towners" around one of our most beautiful parks in Eau Claire: Phoenix Park. Its unfortunate that it's not until we see what we have through others' eyes that we really can appreciate it to its full extent. As a photographer in Eau Claire, I am so thankful for the gorgeous parks, downtown areas, and other various locations and venues that make this city so unique! After living here for over 12 years, I can truly say that it is my home and that watching this city and its people grow and flourish has been inspiring. I <3 Eau Claire!

I knew her mom prior to the shoot, and she's an amazing woman--passionate, loving and strong. It was so neat to see those same qualities in her daughter. I don't do many weddings, but it was a true pleasure to photograph Adam and Kaira's special day. Everyone had such a blast, and their friends and family were so much fun to be around. My husband came along as my second shooter (and did an awesome job, btw) as well as provided what I would call comedic entertainment to the groomsmen!

Danielle is a senior from Adrian, MI and she happens to be the daughter of a dear friend of mine, Sheila. Their family lived here in Wisconsin for many years until just recently when they were drawn to Michigan to begin a new chapter of their lives there. Danielle had to start over at a new school, and the whole family has had to face multiple transitions of work, church, and new relationships. I know the last year has been challenging for all of them, but I also know that they have been encouraged and supported by many friends. I love this quote: "true friendship is when two friends can walk in opposite directions, yet remain side by side."

This session started out beautifully. The weather was perfect all day and everyone was having a great time. And then, all of a sudden, the wind changed, the temperature dropped about 20 degrees, and it started P O U R I N G. We tried to wait it out, but finally decided to finish the session later in the week. Even though it didn't go as planned, it all worked out wonderfully. So I wouldn't change a thing!

On the Farm

I was so excited when Kristin emailed me to schedule this shoot! I have worked with this family before and each time it gets more and more enjoyable! Here are some reasons I love working with them:

1. I adore their kids! Having two boys of my own who are about the same number of years apart, I am often reminded of my own kids and I see so many similarities to their interests and personalities. They are creative kids who love to laugh, and more importantly, are secure in who they are.

2. They have gorgeous land on a wonderful farm, with a beautifully decorated older farm house that could not be more picture-perfect!

3. I love Brad and Kristin's laid-back personalities. They are always willing to go with the flow and be themselves. Their kids listen to them and know who's boss, but at the same time, their kids are allowed to be kids and be silly and have fun.

The only disappointment on this shoot was the weather. We had about 5-10 minutes to shoot outside before it started to rain! Luckily everyone was up for shooting indoors, and here is the result!

So, the story is that I love robots. Especially vintage robots. I also love vintage outer-space related stuff in general. I buy everything under the guise of having two boys who sort of like to play with them. But really, I hardly let them play with them because they are just for me. ;) I was so excited when my son Ian decided to be a robot for Halloween last year! Oh the Humidity!

Thinking about this shoot makes me laugh. The humidity was so bad (at 8:30 am, mind you) that for the first 20 minutes or so, my lenses were constantly fogging up! Then, on top of that, we were swarmed by mosquitoes and gnats. Ugh! Nature was apparently not on our side. But after changing locations and letting my camera adjust to the heat, everything turned out beautifully. I had a great time photographing this family and was sad to see them leave to go back to their home in Michigan!

I had a wonderful time photographing Alissa. When we were discussing locations, I mentioned this gorgeous blue/grey faded wall on the back side of Water Street here in Eau Claire that would be a perfect compliment to one of her outfits. It was a big ol' disappointment when we got there and it had been "fixed" by tearing down the wall and replacing it with plywood (of all things!) Luckily we found some other great spots downtown and even a similar blue wall that worked perfectly!

PS- I am sizing my photos a little bit smaller so they can fit fully on a normal screen. Is it helping?

Wow, some of you have gotten pretty close to guessing what I secretly collect! I think the best guess so far was LeeAnn's guess of scarves, not because that's close, but because I do, in fact, have many scarves. Let me tell you a little bit about Courtney.

Courtney has a huge heart. Each summer, she has spent time down in New Orleans volunteering to help New Orleans residents recover and rebuild their lives after Hurricane Katrina. While many have forgotten about the people whose lives were devastated in 2005, Courtney and her friends have not. That's just who she is!

It was so much fun to spend an afternoon with Courtney for her senior photos. Most of all, it was fun to give all the attention to this deserving senior who spends so much of her time focusing on others.

Remember summers when you were a kid? Some of my best memories are summer-time as a little girl. I remember picking strawberries, carrots, tomatoes and onions in my grandparents garden. I remember catching fireflies at night, eating watermelon until my shirt was soaked, washing my bike with water and dish soap in the driveway, climbing trees, swinging on my swingset for what I thought were hours, picking flowers in the field behind my house, wading in the river, getting sprayed by my dad with the garden hose, catching frogs in window wells, helping my mom hang sheets out on the line to dry, exploring up and down streams, taking rides in the back of a pick-up truck, and walking down to the corner store to get candy. No cares in the world. Ahhh...to be a kid again.

These photos of Ava (and her baby sister, in my next post) made those memories come flooding in! Hope you enjoy!

We were so lucky to have beautiful weather on this shoot! Here in Wisconsin, we went from around 90 degrees down to 52 degrees in the week after this shoot. Believe me, I know first-hand how cold it was while sitting outside waiting for my kids during swimming lessons at an outdoor pool. The pool was heated, so it was all I could do to hold myself back from running up and sticking my feet in the pool! Talk about some crazy weather!

I had such a wonderful time on this shoot. Robyn is gorgeous, both inside and out. And what a fun bonus to be able to photograph her family as well (preview of that shoot coming soon). Good luck in your future endeavors, Robyn!

A few years ago, I saw a commercial and was CONVINCED that the woman on the commercial was someone I knew from high school. I even remembered her name. Every time the commercial would come on I would tell my husband "I am SURE that's her!" until finally, he decided to prove me wrong. It only took a few seconds of a Google search to find out that it was definitely not her.

I've lived in Eau Claire for 11 years now, and I often run in to people I know or see people I recognize. I am a visual person, so I can easily remember a face but I have a hard time with names. Now, every time I see someone I think I know, my husband says, "I bet they're from your high school, right?" (I should mention that my graduating class was about 80 people, so the chances of actually seeing someone from my high school is pretty slim.)

BUT--Lo and behold! Jessica (the mom in the photos below) IS actually someone I graduated high school with! It was really fun to reconnect with her and take pictures of her beautiful family. Now maybe my husband will think twice before he whips out the sarcasm! ;)

This is my friend Sara.

Sara and I met in 1999, the week before my husband and I were married. We went to art school together. We worked at the same coffee shop. We had our first babies within about a month of each other. We journeyed through many hard days together. And as our lives moved on and our physical locations have drifted farther and farther apart, we've remained close...sharing in the joys and celebrations in life, the confusing frustrations of kids, businesses, marriages and families, and the discovery of new artistic visions.

My friend Sara is unlike anyone I have ever known.

Work vs. Family. Who wins?

Just a quick post today! It has been a learning couple of weeks for me, as my family (including my husband) had Influenza. Balancing work with a house of sick people that need my care and attention is not so easy! I am just so glad that things are getting back to normal and I have been able to start catching up on work. But honestly, it is hard to call this work when I get to look at these cute faces all day! I love my job!

Teachers

It doesn't matter where you stand politically--there is no denying the importance of teachers. I remember my first "favorite" teacher, Mrs. Johnson. She was my second grade teacher, and not only did I think she was pretty, but she was the first teacher to take me seriously as a person. She did give me a couple pink slips though....which I totally deserved.

Then, there was Miss Ketter, my fifth grade teacher. She was young and cool, and I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I remember her telling the boys in our class that it was time to start wearing deodorant. I agreed. I did my first "speech" in her class. It was about John Naismith inventing basketball. She also made us memorize the capitals of every state.

Mr. Divine, my 7th grade Literature teacher, was hilarious. He made learning so fun and gave us all sorts of creative projects. One of our projects was to bring the stinkiest, most rotten food items from our fridge. I don't remember the purpose, but I do remember it being disgusting.

Mrs. Brennan, my 8th grade English teacher had an awesome low, raspy voice that made it impossible for her to yell, yet we didn't get away with much on her watch. She taught me the difference between there, their and they're. She lived in town, so we always made it a point to stop by her house and say hello when we were nearby.

Mr. Woodford was our band director. He always let us go outside the first day of spring. He made us wear horribly hot polyester uniforms for marching band, in the middle of summer. If nothing else, it sure built character. :)

I made it a point to take one of Mr. Meade's classes every year of High School. He was the most challenging teacher I had back then. He taught us about humanity, social issues, and most importantly, our potential as young learners. I got my first C in one of his classes.

I had amazing professors in College. Gene Hood, Scott Robertson, Tiit Raid, Steve Terwilliger, Steve Katrosits, Mike Weber, Bobby Pitts and many more. Each of them taught me how to be a better artist. They critiqued my work (sometimes gently, sometimes not), challenged my processes, and exposed me to ideas and techniques that I never would have known otherwise. They helped me become who I am today!

Why am I writing all of this stuff about teachers? Two reasons:
Reason #1: I was inspired by author Ken Szymanski's latest article in Volume One.
Reason #2: the mom and dad of these two little boys are both teachers! And one of them happens to have taught both of my sons in Kindergarten.

So I took it as an excuse to say a huge THANK YOU to all of the teachers out there who have had an effect on my life, and now the lives of my kids. You guys rock!!

Winter Soundtrack

I loved working with this family. As you'll see in these photos, they have a ton of fun being together. They even provided a winter wonderland soundtrack for our shoot via iPod and external speakers, which traveled with us from location to location. We had such a great time, I'm starting to think maybe I need a soundtrack for every shoot!

I am not going to lie. Photographing newborns is not always an easy task. With feedings, diapers, siblings, etc. it can be a LONG and exhausting process. But little Grace Harper was a dream! She just snuggled right up and slept through almost the entire session. What a sweet baby and family!

After the Snow

It may be a surprise, but I love shooting in late November. The temperatures are definitely cold, the leaves have fallen, snow is beginning to settle in....but, the natural light is BEAUTIFUL. There is this soft haze that diffuses the sun that is like no other time of year. And when I have a gorgeous senior like Emily--with killer eyes and a natural ease in front of the camera, I remember why I love this job so much!

Meet Frank. Being the snowboarder that he is, he didn't mind braving the cold and windy snowstorm that threatened our shoot. In fact, that proved to be the most fun part of our time together! Of course we did take a few indoor shots as well, which were enhanced by the addition of one of Frank's prized possessions; his trombone!

Third time's the charm.

When this family called to book their session, I was thrilled because I worked with them in the past. I love to see families grow and change and expand. Being that they were not from Eau Claire, they left it up to me to determine the location of our shoot, so we decided to visit one of the local apple orchards near Eau Claire. The problem was that most of the orchards didn't open until 9 or 10am on a Saturday, and we needed to start early, since rain was on the way. So we decided on another favorite and frequent location of mine, Gem Gardens. All was well until we showed up at their normal opening time...and the gate was locked. A quick phone call to the office confirmed that this was the first day they were CLOSED for the season!! After racking my brain (not wanting to make them drive their little ones across the entire Chippewa Valley) we decided to drive out to Lowes Creek County Park. And I think it turned out to be the perfect location for us!

This senior session was a blast. I had to laugh, because never in my years in the photography business have I had a whole family come along for a senior shoot. I've done a quick family photo or two at the beginning or end of a senior shoot, and I've had siblings and friends come along for the shoot, but I have never had an entire family come along just for the sake of hanging out together. How fun!

I am a Jennifer. When I was growing up, I knew about 10 other Jennifer/Jenny/Jens personally in my life. There was Jennifer G., Jenny F., Jennifer P., Jennie H., Jenny L., Jenny B., Jenni S., Jennifer B., Jen K., and I was Jenny M. (Okay, that makes 9 that I can remember...but I know there were more!)

Well, it seems like the same thing is going on with the name Emily. I have had so many Emilys as clients this year, I can hardly keep my client folders straight! Fortunately, they have each had very unique personalities, each bringing a new definition of "Emily" to the table.

I was so excited when I received the call from Ryan and Emily's mom, telling me that she had senior twins at Altoona High who wanted me to take their senior photos. Maybe it was because I had such a wonderful experience with the last set of twins I worked with, or maybe it was because I don't get the rare opportunity to work with twins very often...Either way, I knew it would be super fun and we would have a great time.

You know those few people in your life that you can be totally real with, who see you for who you are and love you anyway, who you can laugh with and cry with (sometimes in the same minute), who know your story and tell you theirs, who pray for you (for real), and oh yeah, love you and everyone around them unconditionally? I love photographing seniors like Emily! Despite our troubles finding outdoor locations that weren't flooded on the day of this shoot, Emily stayed positive and was up for anything. We drove all over town, and actually ended up with some gorgeous locations that we might not have found otherwise. Check out the result!

Fall is in the air

There's something about fall that makes my job extra enjoyable. Maybe it's the changing colors, maybe it's the crispness of the air, maybe it's the ready-made ~~excuse~~ reason to wear sweaters and scarves. Whatever it is, I love it. As a photographer, I love being able to work with so many different types of families: artists, politicians, builders, teachers, small business owners, designers, etc. Jenny and her family are another example of the interesting people I get to meet. They're very involved in the theater, so one thing she really wanted to do was get some shots at the State Theater downtown. It was fun to capture that downtown vibe, and she and her family were great to be around during the shoot! Here's a sneak peek!

When I walked up to Tori's door to begin our shoot, I knew right away it was the home of an artistic, fun family. Starting the shoot there made everything feel relaxed and allowed the creative process to flow naturally. From that point on, the evening resulted in some gorgeous shots of this super fun high school senior. Hope you enjoy!

Hanging with the Guys

This session was a little out of the ordinary for me... Not just because I was photographing a senior guy (which for some reason, I don't do too frequently) but because my husband Grant was able to come along! And wow, did it make for a creative and hilarious shoot.

I have to say, I LOVE having him with me!

Not only is he a stellar collar-fixer and gear-carrier, but he has an awesome eye for locations and he pushes me to try things that I otherwise might not think of doing. On top of that, his main job during this shoot was to help get some natural smiles out of Braden, a very talented senior from Chippewa Falls High who happens to be a family friend of ours.
